Our client, a prominent defense contractor, grappled with the management of 1400 diverse projects using 1300 engineers. An alarming 60% of their engineers had schedules that were only half-filled, leading to inefficiencies and escalating costs. The task at hand was to devise a solution that could automatically match engineers with projects, considering factors such as skill sets, security clearances, and project timelines. Furthermore, the ever-changing project timelines necessitated real-time updates every two hours. The objective was clear: provide project managers with seven suitable engineer options for each task, all while adhering to budget constraints and geographical proximity.

The Technical Landscape

Our approach leveraged the Microsoft Azure Government Cloud, uniquely tailored to meet the client’s needs. The key technologies employed included Python for data science, Spark and SQL for data engineering, Azure ML Studio for deployment, and Power BI for data visualization. Custom libraries were developed to circumvent the constraints of the government cloud.

Project Implementation

The project unfolded in two distinct phases: prototyping and implementation. The prototyping phase involved extensive research and development, where a robust data science algorithm was meticulously crafted to handle the client’s complex requirements. Python played a pivotal role in feature engineering, model selection, and computational resource optimization.

The second phase centered on deploying the algorithm into the client’s government Azure cloud environment. This posed unique challenges, including limited availability of specific Azure Core ML libraries. However, our team overcame these hurdles, successfully deploying the algorithm in Azure ML Studio. The most remarkable achievement was the reduction in processing time from an initial eight hours to just 300 seconds.

The outcomes of this project were truly transformative, delivering substantial benefits to our client:
